How do you induce a flow state?

Flow state is an incredibly powerful productivity tool. It can help you build a business, power through daily emails and tasks, accelerate your learning, and so much more.

Many of you listened to my conversation with Steven Kotler, where he walked you through how to unlock flow state so you feel your best and can achieve peak performance in our previous episodes.

Today I’m excited to have Scott Donnell, founder of Hapbee, back on the show to add his gems for our flow enthusiasts. Hapbee is a company that makes a patented, wearable device that lets you choose how to feel. Using state-of-the-art technology, Hapbee helps with everything from focus to sleep, including flow.

Listen in as Scott shares how he uses flow to concentrate on his daily priorities and how Hapbee technology can help you achieve deeper focus & flow.

If you haven’t listened to our first episode with Scott on sleep, be sure to tune in here.

"Our mission at Hapbee is to help you realize how much you are capable of by helping you unlock these powerful abilities in your body and your life."

Schedule Your Day For Success

  • As technology continues to develop and become accessible, the number of distractions in our day-to-day lives grows.
  • That makes it even more important to figure out how to work smarter, not harder.
  • This relates to everyone, not just business people.
  • You may have kids, volunteer, have social obligations—all these things build into a million things pulling you in different directions.
  • The more you have to do, the harder it is to get everything done.
  • That’s why it’s so important to protect your time for deep work and that you make sure you’re getting the right work done.
  • You want to focus your time on doing the most important things first.
  • If you are like many people, you wake up and turn on your emails. But email is a list of everybody else’s priorities for you.
  • Start thinking about your work life in terms of what you need to get done today by using short, measurable goals that focus on those priorities.
  • Those are the things you’re going to focus on from the moment you hit your desk or wherever your work environment is.
  • Scott never sets more than three actionable items for his day because he knows he gets his best work done when he knows that he can achieve what’s in front of him.
  • Set a manageable to-do list so you can accomplish everything on it.
  • Then, if you get more done, those are all a bonus.
  • Scott talks about a book called The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan.
  • You can live in the gap, which is when you think that you’re not enough and you’re never going to get it all done.
  • You might have 39 things on your to-do list and even if you complete them all, you still beat yourself up for missing the 40th item.
  • That’s called living in the gap.
  • The gap is an unending horizon that you’ll never reach.
  • According to Dan, that’s the worst way to live—it’s like living in jail.
  • The best way is to live in the gain.
  • That’s where you give yourself plenty of time to reach your goals and assess your progress on a daily and quarterly basis.
  • Set your daily items, focus on them, and don’t let anything get in the way.
  • Then, when you look back at the end of the day, you feel satisfied at achieving your goals, have gratitude for the day, and set yourself up to get a good night’s sleep so you’re ready for the next day.

Prioritize Your Time For Flow

  • Setting smart, simple goals is the best way to set yourself up for doing deep work.
  • You can’t reach a flow state when you’re worried about trying to get a million other things done.
  • You prioritize your day and protect it.
  • Two additional books that impacted Scott are The Ruthless Pursuit of Rest and Essentialism.
  • Those two books helped Scott rethink how to only do what’s most essential and the importance of scheduling margin.
  • Scheduling margin is when you allow time in your schedule for yourself.
  • Look at these uninterrupted times as the most important meetings of your day for resting, rethinking, and learning.
  • Schedule your week where you have days just for follow up, learning, emails, and talking to people.
  • Other days are focus days.
  • These are the days where you focus on the major projects that you need to move things forward on.
  • And then make sure you schedule rest days, or free days.
  • Those are days where you aren’t doing any work, looking at your phone, or taking calls.
  • Do things that rejuvenate you because it’s during those relaxing down times that your next idea will spark.
  • When your brain is free, it can be creative and that also helps unlock flow states when you next sit down to focus.

Using Technology To Tap Into Flow State

  • Hapbee is 18 years of research and development in the labs with over $80 million and nearly 40 patents.
  • The idea was how could they extract the magnetic signature of a molecule and play that back onto the body so that you can feel the effect without any negative side effects.
  • Things like caffeine, melatonin, and CBD can cause metabolic or digestive issues, half-life problems that can interfere with sleep.
  • Hapbee has 8 base signals on their app right now for things like appetite suppression.
  • Behind the scenes, they’re talking about memory triggers and neuron firing to help you learn faster.
  • Right now, they have some incredible nootropics in the app to help with flow time and deep work.
  • They have caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine which is the stimulant in chocolate.
  • They’ve had reports that it actually curbs the craving for chocolate.
  • Dr. B.J. Fogg talks about the power of prompts. Having a trigger can set a behavior into motion.
  • Using a piece of technology like the Hapbee can be a powerful prompt to signal to your brain that it’s time to focus.
  • Going back to Dr. Fogg, the perfect prompt is motivation, ability, and a prompt map.
  • You may have the motivation to get something done and know you have the ability to get the task done but then you need the right prompt.
  • You can use Hapbee as that prompt to help you focus and stay alert.
  • The theobromine signal gives you energy on command.
  • It signals focus throughout your body by triggering receptor sites through free-ranging electrons mimicking noncovalent bonds.
  • Practically speaking, you can think of it like a shield.
  • If you have three things to get done, you block out all distractions, set a time, and put on the Hapbee with a focus blend.
  • The focus is a nootropic trigger that’s firing your neurons, helping your brain focus, so you can get in the zone faster.
  • It’s creating a biophysical change in your body but when you make the choice to use Hapbee, it’s prompting you to get into a flow state and continue working in it.
  • There are a lot of different prompts for everyone, but this can be an easy one-step prompt.
  • Hapbee is also launching new blends that give you the ability to pulse two different signals back and forth.
  • These can help you relax, energize, master your attention, boost your creativity, enhance deep work, and relieve stress.
  • Hapbee helps give you your agency back. You don’t have to hope you’re going to feel calm or alert.
  • Hapbee is a supportive device to help control how you feel.
  • It comes with an entire toolbelt that you can have at your disposal for more productivity, focus, energy, relaxation, and sleep.
