Do you feel like you are absent-minded? Are senior moments coming a little bit early?

Two of the most costly words in business and in life are, “I forgot.” I forgot your name. I forgot this meeting. I forgot about this assignment. Here’s the good news: It’s not true that your memory is fixed. 1/3 of your brainpower is genetic and based in biology. 2/3 of it is in your control. AND there’s no such thing as a good or bad memory – only trained or untrained. After all, school was a great place to learn what to learn…but it didn’t teach us how to learn.

But learning how to learn – how to read, focus, remember, and more – is the most important skill to master in the 21st century.

My mission in life is to help people learn quickly, focus quickly, and remember more.  I know you can do this because I grew up with learning challenges from a head injury at 5 years old. It even took me a few years longer to read than everybody else. But I learned how to work my memory so it could work for me.

To begin, think of a specific subject you want to learn faster, like a language or a musical skill. You need something specific for this four-step process to make sense.

In this episode, I reveal the techniques I teach my world-class celebrity and CEO clients to help them learn ANYTHING faster. Whether you’re a student who needs to learn a new subject for a test or a career professional who needs to make a deadline, accelerate your learning with the mother of all memory techniques.

The 3 Keys to Activating Your Kwik Brain

  • To learn this well, I’m going to have you apply it to remembering names so you have context and relevance.
  • Our goal? Stop forgetting someone’s name immediately after the handshake breaks.
  • We want to overcome the 6-second syndrome. When you meet someone, you have 6 seconds to do something with their name. Otherwise, it will leave your working memory, and you will never remember it.

The M in MOM stands for Motivation.

  • If there were a suitcase next to you with $100,000 in it, and all you had to do to get that money was remember the name of the next person you met, you would remember that person’s name.
  • It has nothing to do with your capabilities and everything to do with how much you wanted it.
  • Many of us don’t forget names—we’re just not motivated to remember them in the first place. Next time you meet somebody, ask yourself: why do I want to remember this person’s name?
  • Tune into everyone’s favorite radio station – WIIFM, or, “What’s in it for me?”
  • If you can’t come up with a reason, you won’t remember. Reasons reap results.
  • The success formula of H-cubed goes from your head to your heart to your hands.
  • You can visualize and affirm goals in your head,  but if you’re not acting on them with your hands, then usually what’s missing is your heart.
  • This emotion, or energy of motion, is the fuel and energy that’s going to get you what you want to remember.
  • Remember, motive matters.

The O in MOM stands for Observation.

  • Many of us believe we’re bad at remembering names.
  • Eliminate this negative self-talk – because when you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them.
  • It’s also often not a retention issue but an attention issue.
  • Leaders have a wonderful memory because it shows that they care.
  • The second time I met Bill Clinton, he remembered not only my name but also the conversation we had had.
  • When I asked him about his memory techniques, he told me about his childhood growing up in Arkansas. His grandfather would gather up all the kids in the living room and tell them long stories. He would later quiz them on those stories to see if they were paying attention.
  • Bill Clinton also has incredible charisma. His powerful presence and memory comes from being powerfully present.
  • Next time you meet somebody, be present. Listen instead of waiting for your turn to speak.
  • Write down the word “listen” and scramble the letters. It also becomes “silent.”

The final M in MOM is Mechanics.

  • These are the tools, techniques, and strategies you need to learn.
  • Learning how to learn is the biggest needle mover for your learning and your life. And each episode of our podcast will give you these step-by-step mechanics.
