Just how important is our second brain—our gut? How much does our gut influence our mind? How important is our gut to our health? Why are we spending trillions on healthcare only for many of us to get sicker? Are our genes our destiny?

An international leader in industry disruption and founder of groundbreaking companies such as Viome and Moon Express, today’s guest Naveen Jain has built his career on thinking big, with years of experience applying exponential thinking to a variety of industries, including the healthcare industry.

Our gut is one of the most crucial determinants of our health. If something goes wrong in the gut, it can affect our thinking, decision-making, and risk of disease. Modern living and new chemicals are penetrating our gut lining, meaning that our body is dealing with foreign bodies never before seen—and this is resulting in heightened rates of inflammation and illness despite our ever-rising rates of investment in healthcare.

In today’s conversation, we talk about why you should trust your gut, explain how much control our gut has over our bodies, and explain why genes are not our destiny. We’ll cover the diseases chronic inflammation has been linked with—think everything from Alzheimer’s to depression—and leave you with some ideas to increase your knowledge of your health.

TRUST YOUR GUT

  • Your gut produces 90% of the serotonin in our body—the hormone that makes us feel good!
  • Your gut is directly connected to our brain through the vagus nerve.

NAVEEN’S STORY ABOUT THE MICROBIOME

  • Single-cell organisms have been on this planet for 4 billion years, with humans appearing a couple of hundred thousand years ago.
  • One day all bacteria and viruses came together, sick of living in a small area, and said we need to create something to live inside—all we have to do is keep it healthy, and it will take us all over the world and spread us around—so they created humans.
  • Mitochondria were worried about humans becoming smarter than them—but this wasn’t an issue because all the energy a human needs comes from the mitochondria in their gut, without it, their energy is shut down; additionally, there was a direct connection from the brain to the gut.
  • What happens in the gut happens everywhere; gut can control our decision-making, amygdala, thinking, and health.

GENE EXPRESSION

  • There are more foreign cells in your body than human cells—you are less than 1% human when it comes to gene expression.
  • Genes are not your destiny; nature controls what genes are expressed.
  • Imagine if your overall control system is being controlled by your gut—with your gut digesting food, releasing metabolites, and changing the expression of your genes.
  • Food ingested not only provide nutrients; at other times they also produce lipopolysaccharide (LPS) which is toxic, inflammatory.

THE MICROBIOME

  • 95% of diseases caused by chronic inflammation and microbiome imbalances— connection with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, cancer, and other diseases.
  • Your immune system is seeing things it has never seen before, causing chronic inflammation.
  • There’s no such thing as universal healthy diet—no such thing as healthy or unhealthy food—a food that is healthy for one person is not healthy for someone else due to differences in what your microbiome can digest.
  • Things your microbiome cannot digest get converted into toxins, leading to inflammation.
  • Learn more about Naveen’s company Viome and assess your own microbiome.

HEALTHCARE

  • Trillions spent on healthcare and we keep getting sicker.
  • We could be the generation to be known for eliminating illness, pharmaceuticals, and suffering.
  • You can Google the research yourself: e.g. Parkinson’s + microbiome.
  • When you suppress one symptom with medication it is bound to show up somewhere else.
  • Health knowledge is power: you not only want to add years to your life but add life to your years.
